This is the (supposed*) sword of Pier Gerlofs Donia, otherwise known as Grutte Pier (Big Pete), a Frisian warlord and folk hero of the late 15th century. He supposedly stood seven feet tall, could bend coins with his fingers and pick up a horse weighing 1000 lbs. Even better, he was also a pirate! Here’s his helmet…
*Though the Dutch Wikipedia page suggests the sword on display in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden may be a recent replica, it has no source for the claim. This shot suggests that it’s original enough to need handling with protective gloves (oddly not used in the older BW shots…)
